Ok, so one of my guilty pleasures is watching Girls Next Door…Hopefully no reflection on my character…
I was watching last week and saw an effective use of fundraising via Twitter. Hef’s girls opened a lemonade stand to raise money for AIDS and advertised it on their Twitter accounts. I don’t remember the exact numbers, but they received a significant portion of their donations through Twitter. Many others coming to the lemonade stand came after hearing about it through Twitter. I must say before this class I really did not like or understand Twitter, but if used correctly, it can add significant value to a company or cause – even in the Playboy Mansion.
So you can tweet pictures too? Otherwise I wouldn’t think these “girls” possessed the necessary communication skills (though I can imagine some interesting possible slogans I could mention but now i’ve soured on the idea of sharing them).
It is a good topic though (microblogging and micro-donations i mean, not lemons) and using the web not only to promote but also collect micro-donations is interesting. Didn’t you have to research micro-donations (i think there’s another term for that) for your summer internship?
Overheard a friend talking about Shaq (basketball player/incredible actor and rapper) and one of his Twitter posts, “The_Real_Shaq: opps i dropped a signed sports illustrated n da west side market, findas keepas”. She thought it was a joke, but I’m more cynical and think it was probably a paid endorsement. Think about it: muuuuch cheaper than hiring him to film a commercial or trying to feed him at an in-store event, and I would absolutely put money on the chances that a significant amount of Twits in the area ran to that store looking for the magazine! Good stuff!
halusk2: “yo peeps. new hott shaq merch 4 sale. high bidda is keepa!”
PS: yeesh. Thanks a lot Google-Alerts for yet another disappointing SEARCH:”lindsay crawford”+”playboy” result…

Hal, that was borderline inappropriate.. but very interesting. I have not doubt that was a paid endorsement. Sounds like a scavenger hunt to me.. I’m not sure that your tweet is as effective, though. We want FREE stuff!
